Learn how to install the Meprolight M21 Polarizer & Flash Guard Kit to reduce glare, prevent reticle washout, and protect your red dot sight lens.

Quick Answer

Install the Meprolight M21 Polarizer first to control reticle brightness in variable light, then add the Flash Guard to block lens flares and hide the objective lens reflection.

Why Add Both Accessories?

The M21 Polarizer gives you 19 dimming settings to prevent the reticle from washing out in bright conditions, making target acquisition faster. The Flash Guard screws directly into the M21 or onto the sight body alone to eliminate daytime lens flares and hide the objective lens reflection. Using both together provides maximum versatility without adding bulk.

What You Need

You only need the Meprolight M21 Polarizer & Flash Guard Kit and your M21 sight. No tools are required—both components thread directly onto the existing M21 objective threads. Make sure the threads are clean and free of debris before starting.

Installation Steps

  1. 1. Clean the M21 Objective Threads: Wipe the external threads on the front of the M21 sight with a lint-free cloth. Dirt or oil can cause cross-threading or prevent a snug fit. Check that the threads are dry and free of grit before threading any accessory.
  2. 2. Thread the Polarizer onto the Sight: Hold the polarizer ring and turn it clockwise onto the M21 threads until it is hand-tight. Do not overtighten—you need to be able to rotate the polarizer later to adjust dimming levels. If the polarizer feels loose after hand-tightening, back it off and re-thread carefully; cross-threading is the most common mistake.
  3. 3. Adjust the Polarizer for Your Lighting: Look through the sight and rotate the polarizer ring until the reticle appears crisp and the background glare is minimized. Start with a mid-range setting and fine-tune as lighting changes. You can leave the polarizer on permanently—just rotate it as needed rather than removing it between uses.
  4. 4. Attach the Flash Guard (Optional but Recommended): Screw the Flash Guard onto the front of the polarizer (or directly onto the M21 if you are not using the polarizer). Turn clockwise until hand-tight. The Flash Guard extends past the lens to block side light and hide reflection. The Flash Guard adds only minimal length, so it does not interfere with most holsters or storage cases.
  5. 5. Test for Glare and Fit: Take the sight outside in bright sunlight and check that no lens flare appears. Also confirm that the Flash Guard does not contact any part of the sight body or mounting hardware. If you see a crescent shadow in the sight picture, the Flash Guard may be slightly crooked—remove and re-thread it carefully.
