Learn how to set up your Olight Sunbreeze hammock for hiking, travel, or the backyard. Step-by-step tips for a safe, comfortable hang every time.

Quick answer

Set up your Olight Sunbreeze hammock by choosing two sturdy trees about 3–4.5 meters apart, wrapping the included straps at chest height, clipping the carabiners to the hammock ends, and adjusting the strap loops for a 30-degree hang. Always check for dead branches above and use tree-friendly wide straps.

Why tree selection and strap height matter more than you think

The distance between trees and the height of your straps determine how comfortable the hammock feels. Too short a span and the hammock sags; too long and you may not have enough adjustment. Aim for trees 3 to 4.5 meters apart with trunks at least 30 cm in diameter. Wrap straps at about chest height on each tree, then adjust the loop you clip into to fine-tune the angle. The included straps have six loops, so you can dial in the hang without extra hardware.

When the backyard is your campsite

Backyard hangs are more forgiving: you can use fence posts or a dedicated stand if trees are scarce. But the same principles apply—keep the hang angle around 30 degrees and avoid hanging over concrete or sharp objects. For travel, the Sunbreeze Small packs down small enough for a daypack, but remember that the 210T recycled nylon is lightweight, so keep it away from sharp branches or abrasive surfaces.

Step-by-step Olight Sunbreeze hammock setup

  1. Pick two healthy trees: Choose trees with trunks at least 30 cm in diameter and no dead branches overhead. Measure roughly 3 to 4.5 meters between them. Avoid trees with loose bark or visible damage—they may not hold under load.
  2. Wrap the straps at chest height: Wrap each strap around a tree at about chest height and feed the tail through the loop to secure it. Keep the strap flat against the bark to protect the tree. Never wrap straps above head height; it makes getting in and out harder and increases fall risk.
  3. Clip the carabiners: Attach one carabiner to each end of the hammock and clip it to a loop on the strap. Start with the middle loop on both sides for a balanced hang. Double-check that carabiners are fully closed and not twisted.
  4. Adjust for a 30-degree angle: Sit in the hammock gently and check the angle of the straps. Ideally, the straps should slope down at about 30 degrees from the tree to the hammock. Move to a higher or lower loop to adjust. A tighter hang (shallower angle) feels more stable but can put more stress on the straps; a looser hang is more comfortable but may bottom out.
  5. Test and fine-tune: Lie in the hammock and check that your head is slightly higher than your feet and that the hammock doesn't touch the ground. Adjust strap loops as needed. If the hammock drags, raise the straps; if it feels tippy, lower them slightly.
  6. Pack down and inspect: When breaking camp, check the straps and hammock for abrasion or damage. Stuff the hammock into its attached stuff sack and store straps separately to avoid tangles. Clean straps with fresh water if they pick up sap or dirt; avoid machine washing to preserve the webbing.
